Why was the Articles of Confederation not successful?
-gave to much power to the states and not enough to the national government. No president, only congress. (Legislative Branch)
Ratify
To approve a document, making it legal.
U.S. constitution
-The 2nd constitution
-consists of a preamble, articles, and amendments
-this process was included in order for the constitution to adapt with changing times
(-amendment- addition/change to the constitution)
What is the purpose of a preamble?
-introduction to the constitution
-outlines the goals
-explains that power comes from people
Define separation of powers
A principal in which powers are divided among different branches of government to make sure no one branch has too much power
Checks and Balances
Purpose: Keep all 3 branches of government =. Each branch can limit power of the other branch.
Override
Congress can get past a veto by voting on a bill for a 2nd time. 2/3 of congress needs to vote for it to become a law. Example of checks+balances.
Veto
The ability of a president to reject a bull from congress. Example of checks+balances.
How are amendments added to the constitution?
2 steps. Proposal of the amendment and ratification of it. Can be proposed by 2/3 of congress. Ratification requires approval by 3/4 of the states.
Three-Fifths Compromise
Slaves were considered property and not citizens. Northerners argued that southern states shouldn’t be able to count their slaves as part of the population. Only 3/5 of slaves would be counted toward the population.
Senate
A bill can start in the senate. 2 per state- 100 total

What was not originally included in the Constitution and kept some states for ratifying it?

- =don’t have too much debt, further generations shouldn’t have to pay for it

What impact did Marbury vs. Madison have on the power of the judicial branch?
Established judicial review (The courts power to declare an act of congress unconstitutional)

-British impressment of U.S. sailors
-Interference of U.S. trade
-Wouldn’t leave our land
Louisiana Purchase
Jefferson sent representatives to France to try and buy new Orleans. The French offered to cell all of Louisiana (They needed money after the war) Nearly double the size of US
Embargo Act
Forbade Americans from importing or exporting goods.
The act was meant to keep Britain + France from interfering with u.s. ships.
Monroe Doctrine
-Stated that Europe couldn’t interfere with South America
-South America was considered to be protected by U.S.
-The U.S. would leave existing Europe colonies alone
-Any attempt by Europe to colonize or interfere with South America would be seen as a hostile act by the U.S.
