What are the stages of attachment?
- Asocial phase.
- Indiscriminate stage.
- Discriminate stage.
- Multiple attachment stage.
When is the asocial phase?
0 to 3 months.
What is the asocial phase?
The infant doesn’t have any strong preference about who cares for them.
When is the indiscriminate phase?
6 weeks to 7 months.
What is the indiscriminate phase?
The infant starts to recognise different people, but still doesn’t have any strong preference for who cares for them.
When is the discriminate phase?
7 to 11 months.
What is the discriminate phase?
The infant is able to form a strong attachment with an individual and may be scared of strangers.
When is the multiple attachment phase?
From 9 months.
What is the multiple attachment phase?
The infant can form attachments to many different people, some of these may be stronger than others.
