O-2 years unoccupied play
When newborns and infants use their senses to explore the world and their place in it. Kicking their legs, trying tummy time or putting their hands and feet into their mouths. These are the beginnings of play.
Solitary play
The first stage of play observed in infants. Children play alone as they have yet to develop their social skills social skills to ply with others or prefer to play alone. Solitary play gives the child time to think, create and explore their environment, toys and objects around them
2-3years spectator/onlooker play
They observe others children’s play without engaging in it themselves
Parallel play
When children play next to each other but not interact
3-5 years Associative play
When children play together but have different ideas and goals
Co-operative play
Involves children playing and working with others towards a common goal or purpose
