Q

use of propaganda- stalin cult of personality

A

-use of propaganda had two objectives:
wanted to begin by presenting himself as lenin
-mean connecting his name as much as possible to lenin
-stalin would doctor photographs to remove people who were close to lenin
-second: propaganda shifted slightly
-moved from being presented as disciple to linen’s legitimate and rightful heir
-meaning propaganda presented him as heroic leader of soviet union
-cult of personality began

Q

stalin’s foreign policy

A

-role of foreign policy important: sign of legitimacy
-1921, Chinese communist party formed
-soviet comintern promoted revolution in china, culminating in Shanghai, April 1927
-failed attempt of revolution and resulted in thousands of Chinese communists being executed in subsequent purges

-with germany, Soviet Union signed the treaty of Berlin 1926- expansion of rapallo
-established broad non-aggression between both states

-historians argue comintern was unsuccessful
-this was to try and establish communist revolutionary action abroad
-we can see this with failed revolutions in germany, Hungary, Poland and china
-with stability of germany 1924-28 and the rise of fascism in Italy, it was clear that the comintern was not successful
-1924, Moscow instructed communist parties in Europe to act as more united labour front
-despute this change in messaging, clear that comintern failed to achieve revolutionary socialism
