-possibly influenced by Germany, still had control of finances

-demanded: baltic states, areas of Poland, the Ukraine
this means: 32% of arable land, 26% of railways, 33% of Russian factories, 75% or iron ore and coal mines, 60m of population

-Bukharin: wanted to fight a revolutionary war against Austria-Hungary and Germany
-Trotsky: wanted a truce deal without a peace treaty
-lenin threatened to resign if they would not support him thus, gained support
-3rd of March 1918, Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed
-greatly unpopular and lead to a loss of support
