Standard model Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are fermions?
Particles that make up matter (quarks and leptons)
6 quarks
Up, down, top, bottom, strange, charm
6 leptons
Electron, tau, muon
Electron neutrino, tau neutrino, muon neutrino
What are bosons and what are the 5?
Force mediators responsible for interactions
1. Gluon
2. W+, W-, Z0
3. Photon
4. Higgs boson
5. Graviton (maybe)
What is the gluon responsible for?
strong nuclear force (nucleus force)
only between quarks
What are the W+, W-, Z0 responsible for
weak nuclear force: b+ and b- decay, quark decay
What is a photon responsible for
electromagnetic force: annihilation/creation
What is the Higgs boson responsible for
gives matter mass
What is conserved during interaction?
Lepton number and Baryon number
Charge
Strangeness (NOT weak nuclear interactions)
What is a Baryon?
3 quarks
All baryons have a baryon number of what?
1
Quarks have a baryon number of what?
1/3
Leptons have a baryon number of what?
0
Leptons have a lepton number of what?
1
Quarks have a lepton number of what?
0
What is conserved in an anti-particle compared to its counterpart particle and what is not conserved?
Antiparticles have the same mass
Opposite charge, spin, baryon number
What is a meson?
A particle made up of a quark and anti-quark
Contrast the force responsible for quarks vs leptons
Quarks: strong nuclear force
Leptons: weak interaction, electromagnetic and gravity. NOT reactive to strong force
