Q

How does a nebula form a protostar

A

When enough gas and dust is pulled in it forms a protostar, which has an increase in pressure which results in a larger temperature, it is also bigger and has more grav

Q

How does a protostar form a main sequence

A

This is where hydorgen nuclei form helium nuiclei (Nuclear fusion) and lots of energy which turns it into a MSS, which is perfectly balanced (like our sun)

Q

How does a MSS turn into a red giant

A

When it runs out of hydrogen, fusion can not take place, which results in the MSS colapsing and then starting again to make heavier nuclei, resulting in a red giant

6
Q

how does a red giant turn into a white dwarf/black dwarf

A

the red giant is unable and expels outer layers, as it does this a decrease in temperature and size happens resulting in a colour change, forming a white dwarf then a black dwarf

7
Q

How does a MSS form a red super giant

A

When it runs out of hydrogen, fusion can not take place, which results in the MSS collapsing and then starting again to make heavier nuclei, resulting in a red super giant (Only happens for bigger stars due to their being more fusion)

Q

How does a red super giant form a supernova then a blackhole/neutron star

A

the RSG explode forming a supernova, which then if it is big turns into a neutron star, but if its MASSIVE it will fall in on itself to form a black hole

Q

What is red shift

A

When the wavelength increases and shifts towards the red end of the spectrum as the object moves away from us

Q

Why may distant galaxies have a different absorption spectra

A

redshift may cause the absoptioon spectra to shift, this is because they are moving away from us (Space is expanidng causing distance to grow)

Q

What is the big bang theory

A

all matter was dense and small, till it exploded and keeps expanding till today (Becoming less dense)

Q

Describe how light from distant galaxies shows that the Universe is still expanding.

A

Wavelength (of the light)
appears to increase
(Red shift/dopler effect)

Q

What is the steady state theory

A

It suggests that even if the universe expands, the density of the universe will stay the same (new matter is constantly being created)
