states of mater ×× Flashcards
(3 cards)
name the three states of matter, and the physical changes that occur between them
solid, liquid, gas solid -> liquid = melting solid -> gas = evaporation liquid -> gas = melting gas -> liquid = condensing gas -> solid = sublimation
describe the arrangements and movement of particles in the different states of matter
solid: regular fixed arrangement, vibrate in place, low energy
liquid: random arrangement, particles move around each other, greater energy
gas: random arrangement, particles move around each other, high energy
explain why the movement and arrangement of particles change during changes of state
The closeness, arrangement and motion of the particles in a substance change when it changes state, the movement of its particles increases. bonds between particles break when a substance melts or evaporates, or sublimes to form a gas from a solid.
