States of matter Flashcards
(30 cards)
When do changes in state occur?
when heat energy is added to or removed from particles in a solid, liquid or a gas
What are the three main states of matter?
Solids, liquids and gases.
Particles in gases:
Have weak bonds, are in constant motion, can be compressed, flow and can be diffused easily, have more energy than that in solids and liquids.
Particles in liquids:
cannot be compresses, have semi-tight bonds, have no rigid structure, takes up the shape of its container.
Particles in solids:
cannot be compressed, have strong bonds, cannot move freely or flow, vibrate in a fixed position.
Does a gas have a fixed volume or shape?
No, because gases spread out, filling their containers.
Does a liquid have a fixed volume or shape?
They have a fixed volume, but no fixed shape since they take the shape of their container.
Does a solid have a fixed volume or shape?
Yes, they have both a fixed shape and volume since the particles cannot more or flow.
Compare the densities of solids and liquids to gases.
Solids and liquids have similar densities, and both are far denser than the particles in a gas because, they are more compact.
What pattern are the particles of solids arranged in?
A regular pattern.
What pattern are the particles of liquid arranged in?
A random pattern.
What pattern are the particles of gases arranged in?
A random pattern.
How do the particles in a solid move?
Vibrate, in a fixed position.
How do the particles in a liquid move?
freely, but remain close together.
How do the particles in a gas move?
freely, far apart and at high speeds.
What is the name of a change from solid -> liquid?
Melting
What is the name of a change from gas -> liquid?
Condensation.
What is the name of a change from solid -> Gas?
Sublimation
What is the name of a change from liquid-> Gas?
Boiling, or evaporating at the surface of the liquid.
What is the name of a change from liquid-> Solid?
Freezing.
What is the name of a change from Gas -> Solid?
Deposition
True or False: In a solid, particles are closely packed and vibrate in place.
True.
Fill in the blank: The state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape is called a ______.
Liquid.
Which state of matter has the highest energy particles?
Gas.
