States of matter Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a solid?
When atoms are rigidly packed together in one shape, so they can only move a little in their small space.
What is a liquid?
When atoms are close together, but can still flow.
What is gas?
When atoms are spread far apart and move anywhere they want at fast speeds.
What are the properties of a solid?
It holds it’s shape, unless enough force hits it.
Solids don’t take the shape of the container they’re in.
They differ in shape, size, and texture.
What are the properties of a liquid?
Has no defined shape.
It takes the shape of the container they’re in.
What are the properties of gases?
Expands to fit the shape of the space they’re in.
They are invisible most of the time.
What are the states of matter?
-Solids
-Liquids
-Gases
What causes matter to change states?
Extreme temperature change
What are the six ways matter can change states?
- Melting (Solid - Liquid)
- Freezing (Liquid - Solid)
- Evaporation (Liquid - Gas)
- Condensation (Gas - Liquid)
- Sublimation (Solid - Gas)
- Deposition (Gas - Solid)
