states of matter garrett mauck Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is a liquid
The atoms in a liquid move faster than atoms in a solid but is moves slower that the atoms in a gas. A liquid can change shape but not volume.
What is a solid
A solid has a definite shape and volume
What is a gas?
A gas moves faster than a liquid and a solid. A gas atom a free to spread all over. Gas can expand and fill in the available space.
What is plasma?
It is a state of matter that starts as a gas but then it becomes a ionized.
What is energy?
Energy is the capability to work.
What is thermal energy?
It is the total a kinetic energy of a substance.
What is evaporation?
Is something that can change into a liquid into gas.
What is sublimation?
It is where a solid turns directly into gas.
What is condensation?
Where something that is a gas turns into a liquid.
What is crystalline solid?
Have an orderly arrangements of atoms or molecules
What is amorphous
Are composed of atoms or molecules that are in no particular order
What is surface tension
A force acting at the surface of a liquid that causes a liquid such as water to form spherical drops
What is kinetic energy
Particles that are in motion
What is heat
It causes the temperature to raise to change and can lead to change of state
What is Endothermic change
Adds energy
What is exothermic
It releases energy
Exothermic change
Your are releasing energy
What is a fluid
A non solid states of matter in which the atoms or molecules are free to move past each other, as in a gas or liquid
What is a buoyant force
The upward force exerted on an object immersed in or floating on a fluid
What is a pressure
Is the amount of force exerted per unit area of a surface
What is Archimedes principle
The principle that states that the buoyant force on an objects in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the volume of the fluid that the objects displaces
What is pascal
The si unit is Pa, is the the force of one Newton exerted over an area of one square meter 1 N/m^2
What is pascals principles
States that a change in pressure at any points in an enclosed fluid will be transmitted jequally to all parts of the fluid
What is viscosity
The resistance of a gas or liquids to flow
