advantages of sampling
limited resources so sampling is cheaper
less personal required to administer study so less chance of error
results available faster
if the study units destroys what is being sample then there is no point in texting the whole population e.g. light bulb life span
may be different ease of access to sample units
target population
finite set of all individuals of interest
study population
the part of the target population from which the sample will be taken
population characteristic (perameter)
the aspect of population that is of interest e.g. which 18 year olds in glasgow will vote in the next general election
sampling uni
a single number of the target population
sampling frame
a set of all sampling units e.g. a list or database
simple random sapling
eac individual in the target population has an equal chance of being studied
