Stem Cells Flashcards
(9 cards)
Benefits of embryonic stem cells:
Helps research which leads to new treatments and cures for diseases
Embryonic stem cells:
Can become almost any cell type in the body, they are pluripotent
Risks of embryonic stem cells:
Can cause conflict between people
Drawbacks of embryonic stem cells:
Can’t keep for more than 14 days
Adult stem cells:
Found only in certain places in the body within differentiated tissues. For example bone marrow.
They can only become a limited range of cell types, multi-potent.
Benefits of adult stem cells:
Easier to access.
Can use for an unlimited time.
Risks of adult stem cells:
It’s multi-potent, so limited
Drawbacks of adult stem cells:
Not as useful and research isn’t as accurate.
Stem cells:
Stem cells are cells that can turn into different types of cell - they are undifferentiated
Stem cells can divide to make more stem cells or they can differentiate
Once differentiated, a cell can’t turn into another type of cell
