Define community
a social group of any size whose members share a story, identity, and ongoing patterns of interaction, and whose identity and social practices are in flux
Define emic approach
a viewpoint from inside a culture being studied (inside-out)
Define etic approach
a viewpoint from outside a culture being studied (outside-in)
What is a stable infrastructure?
a form of communication that is regular, organized, stable, and dependable; repeatable things that happen
What is malleable infrastructure?
a form of communication that is irregular, not organized, unstable
When do traditions thrive?
when both stable and malleable infrastructures are strong (Coulter, Neil. Class notes, RMWA 2016)
Define a shared story of a community
events, characters, ideas, and dramatic elements that have occurred over multiple generations
What is the purpose of a community’s story?
provides continuity, connects between past & future, encourages the community to keep gathering; for believers it’s the Gospel story
Define a shared identity of a community and give examples
common points of reference, identity markers (language, food, dress, skills, religion, ideology, geography, enemies, taboos, needs, struggles, artistic forms of communication)
