A group of gay customers at The Stonewall Inn were angry at the harassment by the police & a riot broke out.
Although the police were justifiable raiding the bar b/c they were serving alcohol w/o a liquor license.

A

Men & Women refused to let the cops search & raid them. Police took 4 lesbians. Violence broke out, around 150 people began throwing bottles at cops injuring 2 of them.

Influence of the riots on today’s society?

A

The so-called Stonewall Riot was followed by several days of demonstrations in New York and was the driving force for the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and other gay, lesbian, and bisexual civil rights organizations. Stonewall soon became a symbol of resistance to social and political discrimination that would inspire solidarity among homosexual groups for decades.
