What was the aim of the strange situation?
-To observe key attachment behaviour as a means of assessing the quality of an infants attachment
What was the sample of the strange situation?
100 American middle class infants
state the 7 episodes of the experiment
-The baby is encouraged to explore
-stranger comes in and approches the baby
-the care giver leaves stranger and baby together
-the caregiver returns and the stranger leaves
- the care giver leaves the baby alone
-the stranger returns
-the care giver returns and is reunited with the baby

insecure avoidant
insecure resistant
secure attachment
What is secure attachment
-Infants feel confident to explore their environment while using their caregiver as a safe base
What is insecure avoidant?
-Infants are less likely to seek comfort from their caregiver
- often ignore or avoid caregiver
-show little emotional response to caregivers departure or return
What is insecure resistant?
-infants show clingy and dependent behaviour but are also difficult to comfort
Evaluate the strange situation
unethical -distress no protection from harm
culturally biased- cannot generalise to other cultures
highly controlled observation -standardised procedure
