stratagies and effectiveness at combatting malaria Flashcards
(12 cards)
draining stagnant water
heavy rainfall, time consuming
spraying insecticides (DDt, now banned and malathion)
resistance, insecticides are harmfull
genetically modified sterile mosquite
technology limits
Egg whites can be sprayed on stagnant water to suffocate larvae
waste of food, needs to be done frequently
BTI coconuts -coconuts placed in water - bacteria destroy larvae stomach linings
cheap, enviromentally friendly, small amount needed - can work for 45 days
Medication can be used to kill the parasite/prevent infection e.g quinine or Malarone
parasites often adapt, drugs are expensive for poorer countries e.g Malawi
Educate locals to use insect repellant/cover skin at dusk/dawn
can be difficult to educate people in their own language, though word of mouth is powerfull
Mustard seeds drown larvae
drag larvae into water
Eucalyptus trees to soak up water
invasive, provide shade for mosquitos
Vaccine trials e.g RTS,S
easy to administer through PHC schemes, however only 50% effective
Insecticide treated bed nets
cheap and easy, some cultures beleive they trap spirits
adding fish to paddi feilds e.g the muddy loach fish as they eat the mosquito larvae
