1

Q

What animal research provides support for the GEM?

A

pinching (short term stressor) increases eating, no consistent effect of electrical shock, housing conditions (long term) rats and Syrian hamsters: increased weigh when in improper conditions (isolated rats may be bored)

Q

What IDA point can be made about animal research being applied to human eating behaviour?

A

humans eat for cognitive and social reasons -animals don’t, maternal rodents lick pups when stressed -humans don’t do this

Q

What are the 2 pieces of human research into the GEM?

A

Bellisle 1990: 12 men before surgery (anxiety), then month later chose food, no difference in calories. Michaud 1990: students record eating on day of exam and not, 8% increase when anxious

Q

What IDA point can be made about the GEM model?

Q

What is the individual differences model?

A

Shachter: external eaters (environmental cues), emotional eaters, dieters, women (diet more?) eat more when stressed, normal weight = eat when hungry, stress decreases this, obesity = ignore cues

Q

Who conducted an eating experiment which involved putting people under mild stress?

A

Oliver 2000: 68, prepare 4min speech or control before meal, stress measured physiologically, overall food intake not affected but more sugary foods eaten by stressed

Q

Who conducted an eating experiment with naturally occur stressors?

A

Conner 1999: 33f and 27m, daily hassles ans snack diary for week, questionnaire on external eating, externals= relationship between snacking and hassles
