Structure Of The Earth Flashcards
(5 cards)
Name the Earth’s Layers
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer Core
- Inner Core
Describe The Earth’s Crust
5 to 70 km deep layer.
Divided into 2 types
Oceanic Crust - thinner, denser crust under the oceans
Continental Crust - thicker, lighter crust that extends above the water level
GSI information
This is the outside layer of the earth and is made of solid rock, mostly basalt and granite. There are two types of crust; oceanic and continental. Oceanic crust is denser and thinner and mainly composed of basalt. Continental crust is less dense, thicker, and mainly composed of granite.
Describe the Earth’s Mantle
The large layer below the crust 2900 km thick. Hot dense iron and magnesium rich solid plastic rock.
Solid Plastic means that although the rock is solid it moves like a liquid but very, very slowly. This is called plasticity. (Like playdoh)
Describe the Earth’s Outer Core
Zone of liquid metals, mostly iron and nickel.
Very high temperature and pressure
Describe the Earth’s Inner Core
Solid metal zone , mostly iron and nickel
Very high temperature and pressure
