1
Q

Ionic compounds

A
  • Ionic bonds between metals and nonmetals
    • Metals lose electrons, becoming positive, and vice versa
    • High melting points
    • Often soluble in water
    • Conduct electricity when dissolved or melted
    • E.g. Silver halides (photography)

Metals

A
  • High melting points
    • Good conductors
    • Hard, dense
    • Malleable

Q

Giant covalent

A
  • Covalent bonds form between nonmetals
    • Very high melting point
    • Insoluble
    • Insulators (except for graphite)
    • E.g. Diamond, graphite
    • Graphite only forms 3 bonds, forming layers that can slide and leaving free electrons
