Structures of the brain Flashcards
(33 cards)
Where is the medulla and pons?
The area where the spinal chord enters the brain
What does the cerebellum and pons do?
It contains several of the nuclei of the ANS
What does the cerebellum do?
Important in balance and motor learning
Where is the midbrain (aka “mesencephalon”) located?
Located above the pons
What does the midbrain do?
Combines different sensory information
Directs attention
What is the forebrain also commonly know as?
Diencephalon
What does the diencephalon include?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Where is the thalamus? What does it do?
It is a massive structure in top of the midbrain
It’s deep in the centre of the brain
It is the main relay station for incoming sensory signals.
Receives downward input for higher areas, modulating their relay
Where is the hypothalamus? What does it do?
It is a small structure in front of and below the thalamus
It is directly connected to the pituitary
Therefore it acts as a gateway between the NS and ES.
What is the forebrain also know as?
Telencephalon
What are the three components of the telencephalon?
Cerebral hemispheres
Basal Ganglia
Limbic System
Cortex and Corpus Callosum
What covers and is in the cerebral hemispheres ?
They are covered in cerebral cortex
They also contain several groups of subcortical nuclei
What is the basal ganglia?
A group of nuclei surrounding the thalamus
What does the basal ganglia do?
It is Involved in motor control processes
What does the basal ganglia include?
Putamen, Globus Pallidus and caudate
Putamen and caudate aka. Corpus striatum
What does the limbic system do? What does it do?
It is several interconnected cortical and subcortical areas
Plays a crucial role in memory and emotion
What does cortical mean?
Relating to the Cortex
What does subcortical mean?
Below the cortex
What is the cortex?
The outer layer of the cerebrum
What is the sub cortical part of the limbic system?
Fornix, hippocampus ending in the mammillary body and amygdale
What are the cortical areas of the limbic system?
Cingulate cortex directly above corpus callosum
What is the Corpus Callosum?
Thick bundle of axons connecting the two hemispheres
What is the cerebral cortex?
Thin layers of neurones covering the whole hemisphere
What is a gyri (gyrus)?
Highly OUTWARD folded areas
