What did the CAST I and II studies show?
A
That the antiarrhythmic drugs Moricizine, Flecainide and Encainide actually increase mortality when prescribed post-MI in patients with reduced LVEF. Theoretically this is because slowing the myocardial conduction velocity facilitates reentry. These drugs also raised the energy requirement for successful defibrillation.

Briefly describe the PAIN-FREE studies.
A
Funded by Medtronic, the studies discovered that ATP before a shock was highly effective and also equally as safe as just administering shock therapy.
