1
Q
Introduction
A
- Experiment
2
Q
Aim
A
Explore effects of articulatory suppression on the phonological similarity effects
3
Q
Procedure
A
METHOD
Participants had to recall word lists whilst blocking inner voice:
- Spoken mode of presentation:
1) C1: Rhyming words
2) C2: Non-rhyming words - Written mode of presentation:
3) C3: Rhyming words
4) C4: Non-rhyming words
4
Q
Results
A
- Phonological similarity effect between conditions 1 and 2 (1 was harder to recall)
- No phonological similarity effect between conditions 3 and 4 (equally recalled)
5
Q
Findings
A
When articulatory rehearsal is inhibited (articulatory suppression):
- Spoken information can still enter phonological store (inner ear) directly
1) Rhyming words create similar traces so easy to confuse
2) Yes phonological similarity effect - Written information enters visuospatial sketchpad instead as it doesn’t get recorded into sounds
1) Information is coded visually so traces are hard to confuse
2) No phonological similarity effect
