What were the causes of the collapse of the Soviet Union?

A

The Soviet Union collapses due to lack of popular support, economics, and nationalism. Lack of popular support- most Russians did not feel the USSR was worth fighting for and wanted change. Economics- massive defense spending, inefficient production, lack of incentives to create new technology led to an economy that was poor at producing consumer goods and was in debt. Nationalism- the many different ethnicities which had been forced to be members of the USSR and to participate in Russification seized the opportunity for independence.
