What is functionalism, Conflict Theory, Symbolic Interactionism
Functionalism- The theory that our society is made up of social institutions that rely on each other to function as a society.
CT- There are winners and losers. People competing for Money, Land and Power
SI- Wes assign meaning to objects and once we do those objects have inherited consequences after we assign them meaning.
How does the video Spur Posse speak to different gendered norms for girls and boys? What are the outcomes of these different expectations for women’s and mens behavior?
For boys it is deemed as okay to participate in these actions, but if a girl did it they would be considered a “slut” and would be shamed. The outcomes for boys would be that people will pass it off by saying “boys will be boys” while for girls as i mentioned they would be slut shamed. Boys should initiate and girls should be gate keepers
What are some examples of structural racial inequality? How has the U.S definition changed overtime?
Only Free white citizens could become naturalized citizens originally. White people always had better access to better jobs and the right to vote. It has changed in the fact that jews, Italians, and other europeans used to not be considered white in the U.S. Even rules about if you were black changed from state to state.
Can the post-WW2 government assistance programs for G.I.’s be considered affirmative action for whites? Why or why not?
The GI bill enabled whites to buy new homes with low down payments but many of those communities prevented blacks from purchasing the with the same rights which made it discrimination. 98% went to whites. Blacks were required to rent which means they could never own the house themselves.
What is redlining? how does it relate to white flight from increasingly diverse neighborhoods?
Redlining is the practice of denying services to certain areas based on racial or ethnic comparison of those area, while flight is when the white people flew to suburbs to avoid the high influx of minorities
Why is there an enormous wealth gap between white and black families, even when looking at families with similar income levels.
Unfair housing practices, the perception that home values in minority communities are less. black communities declined in values.
According to Berkman- The health divide is essentially a social class divide. why and how does social class impact americans healthcare experiences? what are the two types of solutions that berkman proposes for the health divide
He makes the argument that if you are in a low social class you are likely going to be in bad living conditions which is going to cause you to have worse health problems in general. 1. progressive taxation (a safety net) 2. Block the downstream path (fix the environmental problem that lead to the health problems)
Why does the u.s antipoverty system not work well?
The U.S antipoverty system does not work as well as other countries because our policies are not as inclusive and helpful for the poor people. Other countries like Spain, England, Netherlands are better than us.
What evidence exists to support the argument that gender and race are socially constructed?
Evolution proves that we are all 1 human race. Gender are race are spectrums not absolutes. Gender and Race are seen differently around the world. For example, norms are different in different parts of the world. If it was biological then it would all be the same across the globe.

Christians - They follow the 10 commandments. Laws in general cause people to do the right thing. Breaking those laws reinforces the laws

To move too far away from the center you are alienating a large group of people. This recent election is a very good example of that in action.
What sectors drive the U.S Economy today? How do the jobs in these sectors compare with those of the industrialized economy of the 1970’s
Today the U.S Economy is driven by technology, services, healthcare, agriculture. Still have industrial but it is not near as much, replaced by technology and machines. GM (Automotive) used to be the biggest employer and now it is Walmart (Services)
Summarize the relative experiences of molly games and balbina duque granados. How do their experiences reflect broader U.S and global economic trends?
Mollie james used to work for the company in the us. for 2/3 of her lifetime. It got bought out twice by big wall street companies. Then move its factory to Mexico where Balbina took over. The economic trend shows that more companies are outsourcing to make more money.
Trends in marridge within and outside of the U.S
Having less kids, More single moms, more single people, less abortion by teens because of sex education

Pros- Gives you at least 12 weeks, guaranteed to keep your job, Companies dont need to rehire Cons- No Pay, Have to work for a company with at least 50 employees, if you need more than 12 weeks you can be fired. Law hasn’t changed since it was creted

Parents ave depression and emotional distress more often than a child that doesnt have a parent. Parents have a lot of pressure from society to create a strong income, while having a lack of child services available for the kid. All due to capitalism.
Why has parenting become more of a challenge in the U.S Today?
Historically communities were homogenous and shared common beliefs and values. As a result of globalization and the integration of communities neighborhoods are more fractured and diverse leaving parents with less in common with their neighbors and possessing of fewer confidants.
What is globalization
The process of interaction and integration among the people, companies and governments of different nations
Briefly explain political opportunities/threat, resource mobilization, and framing in relation to social movements
Resource Mobilization- You need people/time and money. Political Agenda- who you are facing politically. will they stop it from happening.. example: Conservative government vs trying to support pro abortion
What are collective action frames? describe their components and why they are used
I would say that “white privilege”, “black lives matter” and “feminism” are collective action frames that are media and activist driven. They are used to mobilize segments of society to toward activism and awareness to bring about change.
Be able to offer current examples of the Mcdonaldization of society
McDonaldization is a euphemism for faster, cheaper, mass production of goods, across our culture and in the satisfaction of human needs. It is fueled by a psychology of instant gratification and instant reward, probably exacerbated by video games, instant messaging, and addiction to handheld devices. The virtues of patience, planning, and strategy are lost to the priorities of a fast-pased ever more demanding society.
