Study Notes Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are the three goals of science?
1) investigate and understand the natural world
2) explain events in the natural world
3) use explanation to make useful predictions
Define Science
It is an organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world.
What does science begin with?
Observation
Define Observation
It is the process of gathering information
What is Data?
facts or statistics of collecting together/reference or analysis.
What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data?
quantitative data is information about number/ qualitative data is descriptive.
What is inference?
A logical interpretation based on knowledge or experience.
What is hypothesis?
proposed explanation made the basis of limited evidence or observation.
What are two ways we can test a hypothesis?
controlled experiments or new data
What is one of the main reasons that scientist work in teams?
To analyze, review, and judge each others data and hypothesis
What four things does the process of science involve?
1) asking questions
2) observing
3) making references
4) testing hypothesis
What are four factors that affect the way we make scientific decisions?
1) the society in which we live
2) economics considerations
3) law
4) mural principles
How do scientists test a hypothesis?
conducting experiments or studies
What five things does testing a hypothesis include?
1) specify the Null hypothesis
2) specify the alternative hypothesis
3) set a significant level
4) Calculate the test statistics
5) Draw conclusion
What challenged the spontaneous generation hypothesis and how did he challenge it?
Louis Pasteur and he challenged it by conducting experiments and tests.
What is a independent variable?
A variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by other variables.
What is a dependent variable?
Something the depends on other factors
Describe Redi’s experiment.
The dead maggots and flies did not generate like the live maggots and flies dead when there was a rotting piece of meat placed in the jar.
What did Louis Pasteur disprove?
He disapproved the theory of spontaneous generation.
Describe Louis Pasteur’s experiment.
a test whether sterile nutrient broth could spontaneously generate microbial life.
What is scientific theory?
a carefully thought out explanation for observation
What are four major theories for Biology?
1) gene theory
2) cell theory
3) the principle of homeostasis
4) evolutionary theory
