Submission of the Welsh Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What year did the submission take place?
A
918
2
Q
What encouraged the Welsh to submit?
A
Appears to have happened in direct response to Edward assuming control of Mercia on the death of Aethelflaed - Welsh likely saw it as an opportunity to protect themselves against any more Mercian aggression
3
Q
What is there ambiguity around with the agreement?
A
Some ambiguity as to if it was a straightforward submission vs friendly alliance of mutral respect
but largely seems to have been based on subservience
4
Q
Evidence for the submission of the Welsh being a straightforward submission?
A
- occurs directly after Edward forcefully assumed control of Mercia by marching on Tamworth and putting his niece Aelfywynn in a nunnery following Aethelfaled’s death + also the Welsh had faced repeated mercian aggression in the past from both Aethelred and Aethelflaed , so the Welsh may have wanted to pre-emptively submit to Edward as the new ruler of Mercia
5
Q
Evidence for the submission of the Welsh merely being a mutral respect/friendly alliance?
A
- In the past, Alfred had offered to protect the Welsh against the Danes + Edward had continued this friendly tradition, paying the ransom of the Welsh bishop Llandaff when he was captured by the Danes
