Substance dependence
Disorders of intoxications, dependence, abuse, and substance withdrawal caused by various substances, both legal and illegal.
Substance disorder abuse
withdrawal symptoms when the substance is not used.
Tolerance
Continued use of a substance in spite of school or work related or interpersonal problems, but the user has not gotten dependent on the substance.
Substance abuse
Direct effect of the substance after an individual has used or has been exposed to the substance.

A drug that lowers or depresses arousal levels and reduces excitability.
Depressants
Type of depressant: legal depressant for people aged 21 and above.
Ethanol
Type of depressant: prescribed medication for anxiety and insomnia.
Barbiturates
Type of depressant: Prescribed medication for anxiety and for their tranquilizing effect.
Benzodiazepines
Type of depressant: depressant associated with sexual assault.
Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB)
Depressant as well as a minor hallucinogens
Marijuana and inhalants
Psychoactive drugs which induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or both.
Stimulants
Type of stimulant: prescribed to people who are suffering from ADD.
Amphetamines
Type of stimulant: lowers blood pressure and it is a nasal congestion treatment
Ephedrine
Type of stimulant: Found in coffee, tea, and cocoa.
Caffeine
Type of stimulant: addictive; found in cigarettes.
Nicotine
Type of stimulant: Strong drug stimulants and are manufactured illegally. Dissolved in water before injecting
Methamphetamines
Type of stimulant: powder that is snorted

Psychoactive drugs that cause subjective change in perception, thought, emotion and consciousness.
Hallucinogens
Type of hallucinogen: creating sensory deprivation in the brain so that the mind creates its own perceptions without the interference of actual external stimuli.
Dissociatives
Type of hallucinogen: drugs that alter the way you perceive the world around you and are said to expand the mind that is off your brain’s selective perception function and allow you to perceive everything around you.
Psychedelics
Type of hallucinogen: produce completely false perceptions that aren’t based in reality.
