Definition of Sufism

A

Sufis/Tasawwuf are the mystics of Islam. They seek an intimate and spiritual understanding of Allah. All Muslims believe that they will experience such a close relationship in the afterlife, but Sufis believe it is possible during their earthly life.

  • Term came from Arabic root word for ‘wool’ - refers to the white woollen robes worn by Muslim wandering Holy Men
  • Is the mystical branch of Islam
  • Began nearly 100 years after death of Muhammad
  • Sunni and Shi’a Muslims can be drawn to it
  • An attractive doctrine of love - also attracts many non-Muslims
  • Some believe that its doctrine is so universal that one does not have to be Muslim to be Sufi
