Where is Sumer geographically located?
The Tigris and Euphrates, rise in the Armenian mountains and flow into the Persian golf.
What is it referred to in the bible and what it is now called?
Plain of shinar, iraq
What did the sumerians do?
They gave up hunting and began farming. They learnt how to control river floods, built earth banks and ditches to direct water.
What were they named after?
After the city, not a country
What countries did the Sumerians found?
Urm Kish, Larsa and Nippur.
How were they skilled?
They built houses of dried mud, growing wheat, barley, vegetables spinning and weaving cloth, and slicing tree-trunks to make some of the first wheels.
What did writing do? And what did they do it on?
It helped people to communicate and read thoughts of the dead. On soft clay with a nib, which are called cuneiform.
When did they finally decipher cuniform?
For 200 years, scholars struggled, but finally succeeded in 1857.
When were the sumerians conquered?
In 2300 BC, Sumerians were conquered by the northern neighbors, Akkadians. They were descendants of Jews and Arabs.
Who was the king who ruled, and how did he show off his wealth and power?
Ur Nammu (2113-2096) he built a large ziggurat, enclosed by a wall 60metres high and 2 1/2 metres thick. Three stairways to the top (100 steps each). One stairway to nannar, the moon god. Farmers thought that their god watched over them
