Surface area to volume Flashcards
(7 cards)
Why is more SA per unit of volume better for the ?
More SA per unit of volume, helps with more exchange or materials making it more efficient. Exchange stays efficient and fast.
Why is having a lower SA to volume ratio not ideal?
It would take longer for materials to enter and exit the cell which is no use for the cell or organisms, and cell can eventually die.
Factors that effect exchange of materials
Size, shape, temperature, and concentration of materials.
Why does shape effect the exchange rate of materials?
Flatter shapes are more efficient for exchange rather than cubes or spheres. Compartments help cells be more organised with organelles, and less interference. Folds help with more surface area in an overall space.
Why does size effect the exchange rate of materials?
Increase of size, less surface area per unit of volume for exchange.
Why does temperature effect the exchange rate of materials?
Materials exchange across membrane faster when at a higher temperature.
Why does concentration of materials effect the exchange rate of materials?
More materials available, more it will move to the area with less materials (High to low concentration)
