Surgery Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is a thoracoscopy and what can it be used for?
keyhole surgery
biopsy and minimal surgical trauma
what is video assisted thoracic surgery?
2-3 small cuts and a thorascope sends live images to a screen
lower risk of post operative complications - less trauma, reduced pain
all pulmonary resections can be performed under VATS (lobectomy and pneumonectomy)
what does -ectomy mean?
to cut out
what is a wedge resection?
a small triangular piece of lung tissue is removed
what is a sleeve resection?
a lung tumour and part of the bronchus are removed, and healthy ends of the bronchus are sewn back together
what is a pneumonectomy?
removal of the whole lung, usually because of cancer
what is bronchial stenting?
small tube (stent) is placed inside a bronchus to keep the airways open
usually done for blockages caused by tumours, scarring or airway collapse
what is lung volume reduction surgery and what is it used for?
used in the treatment for emphysema
remove part of overexpanded lung to create more space in the thoracic cage and improve respiratory function
what is a pleurectomy?
removal of the pleura
what is pleurodesis?
sticking the two pleura together
what is decortication?
fibrous layer covering lungs / pleura removed
what does an intercostal drain do?
removes air or fluid from the pleural cavity
what are the three things you need in an intercostal drain?
an unobstructed tube
a collecting container below chest level
a one way mechanism such as a water seal
what are the indications for an intercostal drain?
pneumothorax
chest trauma
cardio-thoracic surgery
pleural effusion
empyema
what indicates reunflation of lung (/removal of ICD?)
no bubbling of air
no swinging of fluid level
lung inflation on chest xray
no change in lung volume with ICD cramped 24 hours
