SURGICAL DEBRIDEMENT PROCEDURES Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is debridement?
The removal of infected, dead, or damaged tissue to help the healing of the remaining healthy tissue.
What is the primary purpose of wound debridement?
To improve and accelerate wound healing.
What happens if dead tissue is not removed from a wound?
It can trap bacteria and lead to wound infections.
Why do wounds with dead tissue take longer to heal?
Because dead tissue prevents new tissue from growing.
What is the largest organ system in the body?
The skin.
What are the two primary layers of the skin?
Epidermis and dermis.
For what types of injuries is debridement commonly performed?
- Burns
- Infections
- Wounds
- Ulcers
- Corrosions
What information is necessary to code debridement appropriately?
The depth of tissue removed and the surface area of the wound.
What must the physician specify for accurate coding of debridement?
Whether it involves partial skin, full thickness skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and/or bone.
What code may be reported if the necessary information for debridement is not present?
Only the regular incision and drainage code, 10140.
What are the codes for wound debridement categorized by?
The depth of tissue removed and surface area in square centimeters.
What codes are reported for debridement of subcutaneous tissue?
Codes 11042 through 11045.
What codes are used for debridement of muscle and/or fascia?
Codes 11043 through 11046.
What codes are reported for debridement of bone?
Codes 11044 through 11047.
How is the area of debridement calculated?
By multiplying the dimensions in centimeters.
What code is used for the first 20 square centimeters of debridement?
Code 11042.
What additional code is used for an area exceeding 20 square centimeters?
Code 11045 for the additional area.
Where can vacuum-assisted closure codes be found in the CPT manual?
In the Medicine section under Active Wound Care Management.
Which codes represent vacuum-assisted closure?
Codes 97605 through 97608.
Can non-surgical debridement codes be used with surgical debridement codes?
No, codes 97597 through 97602 cannot be used with codes 11042 through 11047.
