Sustainability Flashcards

What are the 3 pillars of sustainability?
The three pillars of sustainability are:
1. Environmental Sustainability – Protecting natural ecosystems, conserving resources, and reducing pollution to maintain the health of the planet.
2. Social Sustainability – Ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all people, supporting human rights, community development, and access to basic needs like education and healthcare.
3. Economic Sustainability – Promoting long-term economic growth without negatively impacting social and environmental aspects, including efficient resource use and stable employment.
What is sustainability?
What is Passsivhaus
Passivhaus (or Passive House) is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in buildings. Originating in Germany in the 1990s, it aims to reduce a building’s ecological footprint by making it ultra-low energy, particularly for heating and cooling.
Key Features of Passivhaus:
• Very high insulation: Walls, roof, and floor are highly insulated to reduce heat loss.
• Airtight building envelope: Prevents drafts and unwanted heat loss/gain.
• High-performance windows and doors: Triple-glazed and well-sealed.
• Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR): Brings in fresh air and removes stale air while recovering heat from the outgoing air.
• Thermal bridge-free design: Avoids areas where heat could bypass insulation.
• Orientation and solar gain: Uses sunlight effectively to naturally warm the hom
