What is bronchiectasis?
Dilation of the bronchus (in this disease the dilation is permanent).
What is sputum?
Mucus production.
What does wheeze refer to?
High-pitched whistling or squeaking sounds.
What is atelectasis?
Incomplete dilation or expansion (collapsed lung).
What is empyema?
Condition of pus in the thoracic cavity. Also known as pyothorax.
What is anthracosis?
Abnormal condition of coal in the lungs (also called black lung).
What is pneumoconiosis?
Abnormal condition of dust in the lungs.
What is rhinorrhea?
Discharge from the nose (a runny nose).
What is anosmia?
Lack of sense of smell.
What is epistaxis?
Nosebleed (impress your friends ©).
What is glossitis?
Inflammation of the tongue.
What is pharyngitis?
Inflammation of the pharynx (a sore throat).
What is aspiration?
Process of sucking or breathing in (like when you start sputtering when you are drinking and it goes down the ‘wrong tube’. You have aspirated fluid into your lungs).
What is hemoptysis?
Spitting up blood.
What is hemothorax?
Blood in the thoracic cavity.
What is pleuritis?
Inflammation of the pleura (the chronic form of this is called pleurisy).
What is pneumothorax?
Air in the chest cavity (pleura).
What is apnea?
No breathing.
What is dyspnea?
Difficult or painful breathing.
What is orthopnea?
Straight breathing (this is used for patients who are having difficulty breathing in any position other than sitting straight up).
What is tachypnea?
Fast breathing.
What is asphyxia?
Without a pulse.
What is hypercapnia?
Condition of excessive level of carbon dioxide.
