What is a synagogue?
A place of worship which reminds Jews of the Temple that was in Jerusalem.
What is a Menorah?
A candle like the one in the temple.
What is the Ark in a synagogue?
(Holiest part) An ornate cupboard which holds the Torah scrolls.
What is a Bimah?
A stand where the Torah is read.
What does the Decalogue remind Jews of?
It reminds all Jews of their duties.
What is the Ner Tamid?
An eternal light which remains on to symbolize God’s presence.
Why are there no images of living beings in a synagogue?
To keep the commandment against idolatry.
What are Torah scrolls?
They are stored and used during services.
What is the importance of the synagogue?
Required at certain festivals. Community is united - keeps faith alive and passes to next generation. Rituals happen here. Place of education - Hebrew classes. Social and charitable work take place.
What are the characteristics of Orthodox synagogues?
Separate seating for men and women. Only males read and carry the Torah. Rabbi is always a man. Service in Hebrew. Daily services (up to 3 times a day). Only men wear the tallit and tefillin.
What are the characteristics of Reform synagogues?
Men and women sit together. Women can read and carry the Torah. May have music. Women can be rabbis. May not have daily services. Service in Hebrew and native language.
What role does the synagogue play in the Jewish community?
The synagogue is the centre of the local Jewish community, providing a space for religious services, festivals and rites of passage.
What must be kept burning in the sanctuary?
The lamps must be kept burning.
What does the Ark represent?
The Ark represents the ‘ark of the covenant’ that God commanded Moses.

Why are there no images/statues in the synagogue?
There are no images/statues in the synagogue because of the Ten Commandments and the risk of idolatry.
