synaptic transmission Flashcards

1
Q

what is synaptic transmission?

A

the process where the action potential causes information to transmitted from the presynaptic neuron to the postsynaptic neuron via secretion of neurotransmitters

Q

how does synaptic transmission happen?

A

1) stimulation of the presynaptic neurone to produce an action potential causes the release of NT into the synaptic cleft
2) most of the released NT bind with recepotor sites on the dentrites of the postsynaptic neuron
3) NTs are eventually destroyed within the neurone so it can return to its resting position

Q

what are synapses?

A

gaps between neurons where NTs are passed down from one neurone (pre) to another (post)
