Synovial Joins Flashcards

1
Q

What are synovial joints?

A

Synovial joints, also known as freely movable joints, allow movement limited by ligaments, muscles, tendons, and adjoining bones.

Q

What is a ball and socket joint?

A

A ball and socket joint has a spherical head of one bone fitting into a cup-like cavity of another bone.

Example: Located at the head of the humerus, allowing a big range of movement in all directions; it is the most mobile joint.

Q

What is a hinge joint?

A

A hinge joint allows movement in one plane only.

Example: Found between the fingers, at the elbow, and at the knee.

Q

What is a pivot joint?

A

A pivot joint occurs when the rounded pointed end of one bone articulates with a ring formed partly by bone and partly by ligament.

Example: The joint between the first and second cervical vertebrae (atlas and axis).

Q

What are gliding joints?

A

Gliding joints allow movement in any direction, side to side or back and forth, but are restricted by ligaments or bony protrusions surrounding the joint.

Example: Found between carpal bones.

Q

What are saddle joints?

A

Saddle joints occur where both bones are saddle-shaped, concave in one direction and convex in the other, allowing side-to-side and back-and-forth movement.

Example: Found where the thumb joins the hand.

Q

What is a ellipsodial joint?

A

A condyloid joint is where one bone slightly convex fits into a slightly concave shape in another bone, allowing movement in two directions: back and forth and side to side.

Example: Found between the radius and carpal bones.

Q

What is hyaline cartilage

A

Closely packed collagen fibres through out matrix

allows cartilage to have strength and flexibility

found where 2 bones meet to stop scraping

Q

What is elastic cartilage

A

Has elastic fibres and collagen fibres not as packed at hyaline

This allows for flexible elastic support

Found in eat

Q

What is fibrocartilage

A

Doesn’t have as compacted collagen fibres and therefore can only be compressed slightly

Ideal for regions that bare a lot of weight of the body: areas that need to withstand heavy pressure

Found between intervertebral discs
