What is syringomyelia
A
Fluid filled cyst that grows over time and potentially damages the spinal cord

What causes syringomelia
A
Injury
Meningitis
Tumour in spinal
Tethered cord (from birth)
Chiari malformation (protrusion of brain tissue into the spinal cord)

Symptoms of syringomelia
A
Usually between 25 to 40 years old
Headaches
Weakness
M atrophy
Spinal curvature
Painless in arms, neck and back
Loss of sensitivity
Stiffness in limbs shoulders back
Long term complications
Paralysis
Chronic pain
Motor difficulties

Treatment of syringomelia
A
If found incidentally and no symptoms just monitor
If symptoms need surgery to drain syrinx or fix cause of syrinx
