What is IPPV?

  • Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventiliation
  • squeezing bag to give breaths (close off first), can manually fill bag before giving breath

List some things you would check if you encountered an anaesthetic emergency?

  • airway, breathing, MM
  • circulation, pulse, CRT
  • oxygen (flowmeter)
  • breathing circuit is connected
  • ventilation (check bag)
  • ET tube and cuff
  • drugs given -wrong dose or drug
  • embolism, intrapleural air
  • anaphylaxis

Common anaesthetic emergencies include:

airway obstruction

laryngeal spasm

respiratory insufficiency

cardiopulmonary arrest

What should happen if cardiopulmonary arrest occurs?

  • First deliver a single, strong thump to the left thorax, then carry out the below:
  • resus (ABCDE): 
    -airway establish
    -breathing: artificial vent w/ 100% )2, 20-50bpm
    -circulation: external cardiac compresions 100per min
  • drugs
    -catheter
    -adrenaline

What is the goal of CPR?

TO ACHIEVE ROSC (RETURN OF SPONTANEOUS CIRCULATION)

 When not to resuscitate (in cpr emergency)?

 resuscitation is not attempted for

  • animals that have been without spontaneous circulation for more than 15-20 minutes
  • terminally ill or terminally injured patients
  • patients whose owners have signed a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate).
