T10 YR11 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Define a pure substance?
Made up of just one substance which can either be an element or compound
What does a mixture have relating to melting point?
A melting point range not a sharp melting point
What is a formulation?
Mixture that has been designed to produce a useful product
The narrower the melting point the?
The purer the substance
Define chromatography?
Used to seperate mixtures
What is the mobile phase?
Solvent travelling up the chromatograph set up
What is the stationary phase?
The part that doesn’t move on the paper
What is the final separation of the mixture known as?
The chromatogram
What are affinities?
Different levels of attraction in the mixture
If there is only one spot what does that mean?
That the substance is pure
If there is more than one spot in the chromatogram what does it mean?
That the substance tested was a mixture
What is the equation for an Rf value?
Distance travelled by component / distance travelled by liquid
OR
Distance of pigment / solvent front (line of wetness)
What is the test for hydrogen?
Pops with a lighted splint
What is the test for oxygen?
Relights with a glowing splint
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Turns limewater milky
What is the test for chlorine?
Bleaches damp litmus paper
