t4- respiration Flashcards
what 3 things do we use energy for
-building larger molecules from smaller ones
-muscular contraction
-maintaining body temperature
what is metabolism
all the chemical reactions that occur in a living organism in order to maintain life
describe aerobic respiration
-continuous
-used when there’s enough O2
-most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose
describe anaerobic respiration
-glucose->lactic acid
-only used when we have to eg. when sprinting
why don’t we always use anaerobic respiration
-lactic acid builds up which we have to remove
-incomplete breakdown of glucose as there’s no oxygen to oxidise it
-not unlocking all the energy from glucose
which 3 things require energy from excercise
-muscular contractions
-rate of breathing increasing (as oxygen is required for cellular respiration)
-heart rate increasing (oxygen needs to be pumped around the body faster)
describe lactic acid build up
-builds up in tissues
-more build up= more O2 needed to get rid
-leads to oxygen debt
how to get rid of lactic acid build up
-react with O2
-blood carries lactic acid from muscles to liver
-liver reacts with O2 and converts it back to glucose
