Table 7.1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Brain and spinal cord
Central nervous system
Nerves, ganglia, and nerve plexuses
Peripheral nervous system
Multi polar neuron located entirely within the CNS
Association neuron/ interneuron
Neuron that transmits impulses from a sensory receptor into the CNS
Sensory neuron (afferent neuron)
Neuron that transmits impulses from the CNS to an effector organs; for example, a muscle
Motor neuron (efferent neuron)
Cablelike collection of many axons in the PNS; maybe “mixed” (contain both sensory and motor fibers)
Nerve
Nerve that stimulates contraction of skeletal muscles
Somatic motor nerve
Nerve that stimulates contraction of (or inhibits) smooth muscle and cardiac muscle and that stimulates grandular secretion
Autonomic motor nerve
Group of neuron cell bodies located outside the CNS
Ganglion
Group of neuron cell bodies with in the CNS
Nucleus
Group of axons that interconnect regions of the CNS
