Why is Ahlul Sunnah cautious in the issue of takfeer?
Making takfeer carelessly is a characteristic of the deviant sects like the khawarij
What distinguishes a sect that is part of the 72 from those that are completely outside of Islam?
Most of the sects are still within Islam as their beliefs did not reach the level of Kufr. Some however have extreme beliefs that reached the level of kufr and took them out of the fold of Islam like the baatiniyyah, the jahmiyyah, the early qadariyyah.
What did Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah say about those who declare all 72 sects to be disbelievers?
Whoever says that every one of the seventy-two groups is Kāfir (i.e., has Kufr that takes one out of the religion) – then the person who says so has gone against the Qur’ān, the Sunnah and the agreement of the Ṣaḥābah
How did the early scholars, such as Imam Ahmad, approach the issue of takfeer on Ahlul Bid’ah?
Imām Aḥmad and the majority of the Imāms made general statements about groups, they did not make Takfīr about the majority of the people who actually belonged to those groups or had spoken those things. They didn’t make takfeer on specific individuals unless all the conditions were met – just made general statement
Explain the difference between those who believe “Allah is everywhere” with the intent of honoring Him versus those who believe Allah is within creation.
Ahl al-Huluul: people that say that Allah is present within His creation. It is important to distinguish the two types of people who say that Allah is everywhere. They believe that they are Allāh and Allāh is them (similar to some of the extreme Ṣūfiyyah). Example: They say, there is nothing in my turban except Allāh. And when they prostrate they say subḥānī (Glory be to me)
Ordinary lay people who say that with the intent of honoring Allah. If you asked them, are you Allāh? They say, Of course not! Or is Allāh present in unclean places? They say, Of course not!
