TBI and Coma Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is a traumatic brain injury
A non congenital, non degenerative insult to the brain by an external force
What is hypoxia
Not enough oxygen getting to the brain
What is hypotension
Low blood pressure
What is Advanced Trauma Life Support?
ABCDE airway breathing circulaion GCS Exposure
How often is GCS monitored?
Continually
Why is a CT good to test for brain injury?(3)
It’s quick, easy to perform and can detect bleeding and fractures
What is a haematoma
solid swelling of clotted blood
What is a contusion?
Bruising in the brain = swollen tissue and small blood leaks
Name two focal injuries
Haematomas and Contusions
Why does axonal injury occur?
Rapid acceleration and deceleration causing the brain to shoogle around
What does axonal damage affect?
Nerve cells ability to communicate and integrate with one another
What is ICP?
Intracranial Pressure
What does CPP stand for and what is it?
Cerebral Perfusion Pressure = net blood pressure
What is ischaemia?
Inadequate blood supply to an organ
What is oedema?
Fluid retention that causes swelling
What is hydrocephalus?
Build up of CSF within the ventricular system, this causes high ICP
What causes hydrocephalus?
Blocked CSF
An overproduction of fluid
What would the intervention be for hydrocephalus?
Surgically remove blockage in ventricles and drain fluid
What causes high ICP?
High levels of CSF
Oedema/mass/haemorrahge
How would you surgically treat a haematoma?
Burr Holes
What does an EVD allow?
Temporary drainage of CSF, relieving ICP
Name some consequences of TBI
Physical changes, Cognitive processing, Emotional changes e.g. depression, anxiety, Social changes e.g. isolation, inappropriate behaviour
What can cause a coma?
Head injury
drug overdose
What GCS indicates a coma
8 or less
