Which exterior light will operate on battery power
Searchlight
Power to the light and control. The searchlight is provided from the number two DC essential bus
Which interior lights will operate on battery power?
Utility light and maintenance light
Describe the factor that aids in determining distance using the aerial perspective: Fading of colors and shades
An object view through Haze fog or smoke appears less distinct and add a greater distance than it actually is.
Conversely, if atmospheric transmission of light is unrestricted, the object appears more distinct and closer than it actually is
Describe the aerial perspective in relation to size distance illusion
Size and shape constancy are important when a familiar object’s known size and shape is used to judge its distance from The observer
Size distance misperceptions give rise to a number of related illusions whereby a crew member misinterprets an object of unfamiliar size and shaped by comparing it with what they are customs or familiar to seeing based on experience
Describe crater illusion and how to compensate for it
Crater illusion occurs when crew members land at night under night vision device conditions and the infrared searchlight is directed too far under the aircraft’s nose. This combination creates the illusion of landing with upsloping terrain in all directions or landing in a crater this illusionary depression lows the pilot into continually lowering the collective and could result in the aircraft prematurely impacting the ground
Compensate for it by slewing the searchlight out forward of the aircraft
After practicing VMC approaches to Stinson, you transition to Karen’s Army airfield and perform a BMC approach. Your IP tells you that your approach at Karen’s was much too high and steep even though it seemed identical to the approaches you made at Stinson. Which visual illusion are you experiencing and why is this occurring?
Size constancy illusion
A wider runway than expected may cause the pilot to think they’re closer, resulting in flying the approach too high and landing long
In a uh-60 m battery life( when batteries are the only source of DC power) is approximately___minutes. When all equipment is used, this time can be increased by turning off non-essential equipment the___ ___and___ ___ ___.
Note when only battery power is available___charge batteries will provide___minutes of power at night assuming all DC electrical equipment is left on and used including the___ ___. The battery life will be increased by turning off unnecessary equipment.
3 MFD
15 minutes
Limiting radio transmissions
80%
12 minutes
Search light
When must the arrival section of the PPC be completed
If arrival conditions at destination have increased from departure data by the following
Increase of 5°
increase of 1000 ft. PA
increase of 500 lb
What are the night or nvg considerations for a rolling takeoff
- If sufficient, illumination or nvd resolution does not exist, a rolling take option not be performed
- Reduced visual references during takeoff and throughout the ascent at night may make it difficult to maintain the desired ground track knowledge of the surface. Wind direction and velocity will assist in establishing the crab angle required to maintain the desired ground track
- The landing light or search light is recommended at night to view obstacles and maintain awareness of the rotor tip path plane ensure ground clearance with the searchlight or landing light as the helicopter lifts off the ground
