To convince an audience that the writer or speaker is correct, using evidence and reason
Argumentation
Tells a story, often with emotion and empathy involved
Narration
Giving details or something that describes; it relies on the FIVE SENSES to help the audience visualize something
Description
Inform the audience of something with relatively neutral language, i.e., it’s not meant to persuade or evoke emotion; it aims to explain and clarify
Exposition
A book, play, or piece of writing that has been made shorter by removing some details or less important information
Abridgment
A short, clear description that gives the main facts or ideas about something
Summary
Formal document a lawyer uses both to convince a court that the client’s argument is sound and to persuade a court to adopt that position
Brief
A detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory
Critique
Retelling of the past events; using past tense
Recount Text
This part contains the Month, Day, and Year when the business letter was written
Dateline
When addressing a single woman, Mrs. for a married woman. If the status is not known, use Ms. If the firm is comprised of women, used Mesdames or its abbreviation Mmes.
Inside Address (for women)
When addressing a man. You may also use its plural form Messieurs (French) or its abbreviation Messrs.
Inside Address (for men)
This is composed of the word “Dear” followed by the last name of the receiver of the letter
Salutation
