Q

Transmission electron microscope

A

Useful for interiors. Tungsten filament in vacuum column is source of electrons. Drawbacks: tissue is dead, machine is delicate and expensive, specimens must be thin so only portions can be studied at a time.

Q

Ultracentrifuge

A

Isolates specific parts of cells in large quantities by cell fractionation. Tissue mashed in blender, then resulting liquid is spun in ultracentrifuge, separated by density.

Nuclei > mitochondria > ribosomes > clear liquid
