Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
(8 cards)
How are earthquakes and volcanoes distributed?
Uneven and largely linear
Earthquakes at the edge of plate boundaries
Volcanoes mostly clustered around the Pacific Ocean
Anomalous volcanoes found in the centre of oceans
How does a constructive plate move?
Plates move apart
Makes small volcanoes,gentle earthquakes
Eg.mid Atlantic ridge
How does a destructive plate move?
Oceanic plate descends below continental plate
Creates magma and volcanoes
Eg. Eurasian and pacific plates
How does a conservative plate move?
Plates slide past each other
Causes earthquakes
Eg.san Andreas fault
What are the differences in impact in the Nepal earthquake and the Christchurch earthquake.(5)
Magnitude- 7.8 vs 6.3
Deaths- 9000 vs 181
Injured- 22309 vs 2000
Buildings destroyed- 600000 vs 10000
Homelessness- 3.5-4 million vs 10000+
What are the differences in response in the Nepal earthquake and the Christchurch earthquake.
As New Zealand is a HIC it had bigger military so it could quickly dispatch them to people in need resulting in less death
As Nepal is a LIC it relied on international help and NGOs which meant more death cause of taking too long
Why do some people choose to live in tectonically active areas ? (5)
Renewable energy
Fertile soil
Valuable minerals
Tourism
Family and connections
How are the countries reducing risk via planning, predicting and preparing for tectonic hazards
Predict- using seismometers to monitor tremors. That way experts know where and when (-it’s very hard to) earthquakes may occur
Protect- constructing buildings that are safe and don’t collapse
Prepare- in earthquake prone countries residents practise for an earthquake by having drills so they know what to do
