TECTONICS Flashcards
(39 cards)
What are the characteristics of the continental crust?
30–60 km thick, solid granite
What makes up the lithosphere?
The crust and the uppermost part of the mantle
What is the asthenosphere?
The top 100 km of the mantle; it is viscous
What is the composition and thickness of the mantle?
2900–3000 km thick, low viscosity, composed of peridotite
What is the outer core made of and how thick is it?
Liquid iron and nickel, 2300 km thick
What is the inner core made of and how thick is it?
Solid iron and nickel, 1200 km thick
What drives convection currents in the mantle?
Heat from the core causing liquid rock to rise, move sideways, cool, and sink
Describe the ridge push mechanism.
Magma rises at mid-ocean ridges, forming a slope; cooled lithosphere slides down due to gravity
What is slab pull?
At subduction zones, the denser plate sinks and pulls the rest of the plate with it
Name the types of plate boundaries.
Destructive (converging), constructive (diverging), and transform
What is a hotspot?
A plume of magma pushing through the asthenosphere away from plate boundaries (e.g., Hawaii)
What are the characteristics of shield volcanoes?
Gentle upper slopes, low-viscosity basaltic lava, steady eruptions, little pyroclastic material
What defines a composite/stratovolcano?
Steep top slopes, explosive felsic lava, inter-layering of lava and pyroclastic materials
What is an acid dome volcano?
Steep-sided, formed by viscous rhyolitic lava cooling quickly
What is a caldera?
A large volcanic depression formed after an explosive eruption and magma chamber collapse
Name 4 primary volcanic hazards.
Pyroclastic flows, lava, ash & tephra, toxic gases
Name 4 secondary volcanic hazards.
Lahars, volcanic landslides, jokulhlaups, tsunamis
What type of volcano and plate boundary was involved in the E15 eruption?
Stratovolcano, divergent boundary (Mid-Atlantic Ridge)
What were the short-term local economic impacts of E15?
20 farms destroyed, road closures, contaminated water
What were the international impacts of E15?
£130 million/day airline losses, halted flights, stranded travelers
What were some responses to E15?
IMO warnings, evacuations, flight cancellations, improved future preparedness
What are P-waves?
Primary waves, fastest seismic waves, travel through solids and liquids
What are S-waves?
Secondary waves, slower than P-waves, only travel through solids
What are surface waves?
Seismic waves that travel along Earth’s surface causing most damage
